Wind--One of Your Roof's Biggest Enemies
If you thought it was just hail and rain that can damage your roof during storm season, you’d be overlooking one of your roof’s worst enemies—strong winds. Wind can create stress points on a roof that over time can become weak and cause damage to the overall structure. While roofs are designed to resist occasional strong wind gusts, high winds and flying debris can damage your roof over time.
Wind damage typically occurs in certain areas of your roof. The corners and edges are usually more affected, while the center of the roof sustains the least amount of damage. Anywhere the roofing material is a bit loose gives strong winds the opportunity to get below it and push it up, loosening it more and creating an ongoing cycle of damage. A tiny loose area can become a big problem if left untreated over periods of repeated exposure to strong winds. Once a whole side or corner of insulation is exposed, rain can get into the attic and walls and cause leaks and water damage.
Strong winds can also hurl debris at your roof. Shards of glass, metal, and tree branches can become projectiles taking aim at your shingles and guttering. Debris can also clog your drainage systems and create more problems. It’s a good idea to regularly check for debris after episodes of strong winds.
The best way to check your roof for wind damage is to first perform an outside inspection to look for missing shingles, loose guttering, and debris. Then, perform an inside inspection to look for brown or yellow moisture marks or stains, and peeling paint on walls and ceilings. Check your attic for damp rafters. A sudden spike in your energy bill can also indicate an issue in roof ventilation.
