Spring Cleaning for Your Roof

March 31, 2017

When you hear “spring,” do you think “spring cleaning?”  For many of us, this time of year is when we take inventory of many of the items that get neglected or don’t receive regular maintenance in the winter months—our homes, our yards, etc.  This year, add your roof to your list of spring cleaning to-dos!  Here are a few things to look for and tidy while you’re up there:

  1. Gutter damage. Heavy snow and ice can result in damage to your gutters and debris from winter storms can clog them.  Check to make sure that water can flow freely through your gutters and that your downspouts are positioned to direct water away from your foundation.
  2. Tree limbs. If limbs from surrounding trees are touching your roof, they can scrape off the protective granules that cover your shingles. This can greatly reduce the lifespan of your roof.  Tree limbs can also misshape and damage gutter systems.  Trim tree branches that come into contact with your roof.
  3. Mold.  Discolored patches and streaks on a roof might indicated the presence of mold, algae or fungus.  This bacteria can eat away at roofing material and cause leaks.  Mold can be treated with bleach or a specialized solution, but it’s best to consult the experts, like the pros at RSG Construction, to take care of a mold problem.
  4. Moss.  Does your roof get ample sunlight?  If not, or if you allow leaves to cover your roof and collect moisture, you might see moss on your roof.  Call a professional to remove moss, because while there are products available to kill moss growth, you might inadvertently kill surrounding landscaping and grass with uncontrolled runoff of chemicals.
  5. Leaves and Pine Needles. You can’t keep all the leaves and pine needles off your roof, but a large quantity of them can hold moisture, leading to the mold issues mentioned above.  Be careful when removing leaves not to use abrasive methods that might remove the granules on the shingles.
  6. Missing shingles, loose chimney brickwork and flashing. A complete inspection by a professional can uncover any hidden issues that might cause a problem during spring downpours.

A quick spring cleanup on your roof can prevent costly repairs later.  If you have questions about your roof, or would like a professional roofing inspection, give the team at RSG a call at 816-866-4235 or just click HERE to schedule your complimentary consultation.
