Keep Your Home and Family Safe During Storm Season

March 15, 2017

Last week the Kansas City metro was hit with its first severe weather of storm season. Scattered tornados, wind gusts and hail spread damage from Smithville to Oak Grove, and sent families scrambling into their basements. What can you do to keep your property, and your family, worry-free this storm season?

  1. Review your insurance policy. Understand what’s covered if your home sustains damage, and what your out-of-pocket costs will be. If your coverage doesn’t fit your current situation, call your agent for guidance.
  2. Clean out your gutters and adjust downspouts if necessary. Remove debris that accumulated in the fall and winter months and check drainage systems so that water can flow freely away from your home.
  3. Check your roof. Have a contractor do a roof inspection to spot and repair damage that might cause big problems in a storm. RSG will do a GoPro inspection for free.
  4. Trim your trees. A tree falling on a roof can be as devastating to a home as a tornado. Make sure your trees are heathy and are not too close to your house.
  5. Wind-check your property. Keep flying debris to a minimum by securing them beforehand.  Lawn furniture and trampolines can become damaging—and even deadly--projectiles in severe weather.
  6. Prepare a list of local, quality contractors. Many contractors blow into town on the heels of a damaging storm, and blow right on out of town once the job is finished.  Choose a reputable, local contractor who will be reachable long after the storm damage is repaired.
  7. Put together an emergency kit for your basement and car. Include water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a blanket, first aid kit, battery-operated cellphone charger and copies of important documents.
  8. Have a safety plan in place for your family. Know where you will go in case of severe weather, what everyone’s role is, and where you will meet if you are separated and can’t return to your home.

Being prepared can take the panic out of severe weather.  With a plan in place, your home and your family can sleep easier knowing that you’re ready to handle what Mother Nature throws your way this season.  If you have questions about your roof, or would like a professional roofing inspection to prepare for storm season, give the team at RSG a call at 816-866-4235 or just click HERE to schedule your complimentary consultation.
