Ho-Ho-NO! How to Inspect Your Roof for Santa Damage

December 11, 2017

We are two weeks away from Christmas Eve, the night that creates joy for children all over the world…and wreaks havoc on your home. Every year, Santa uses your roof as his personal runway, and lands his aircraft full of millions of toys on your eaves. If that weren’t enough, he lets 9 reindeer scamper at will around your fascia while he proceeds to stuff himself down your chimney, then squeeze back up! All this can spell big trouble for your roof, so we’ve provided a checklist of what to look for once the man in red makes his getaway.

  • Shingles: Let’s face it, a sleigh is not a helicopter, and smooth landings can’t be easy when you’re guiding arctic forest creatures. Check your shingles for any granule shearing or loose patches left by a rough touch-down and take off.
  • Flashing and vents: Large boots and hooves can do a number on the metal parts of your roof. Dents and bends in these structures can allow water to back up underneath the flashing. When this water freezes and expands in the cold winter months, it can cause additional wear and tear on your roof and lead to leaks.
  • Chimneys: It's no secret--Santa’s not known for being a lean, mean sleigh-driving machine. Any dude that takes pride in a stomach that shakes like a bowl full of jelly isn’t going on Jenny Craig before the holidays. And stuffing that jelly bowl wrapped in red and white fur down your chimney is no easy task! This extra pressure can lead to loose bricks and mortar, and if left unattended can be dangerous to your structure.
  • Gutters and downspouts: If landing a toy-filled sleigh pulled by reindeer didn’t put your roof in enough peril, the takeoff definitely will. Reindeer slippage can dislodge gutters and move downspouts out of place. If left precariously positioned, your gutter system will not effectively draw water away from your structure and foundation once the heavy rains of spring roll in.

We might be green at RSG Construction, but we’re not the Grinch. We know that Santa has an extremely hard job and we’re not faulting his toy delivery method. However, we want to keep our customers safe and secure in their homes for many Christmases to follow. If you spot Santa-related damage to your roof this season, or notice anything out of the ordinary, give the team at RSG a call at 816-866-4235 or just click HERE to schedule your complimentary consultation. We love the spirit of the holidays and wish you and your family all the best this holiday season.
