Heat, Humidity, and Your Gutters

June 14, 2017

The summer heat and severe weather can be brutal to a home. However, at RSG Construction we believe that preparation and maintenance can save thousands of dollars in unnecessary replacement, especially when it comes to your gutter system. Many of the problems facing gutters in the summer are the same as expected at any other time of year. However, some are unique to hotter climates, or happen more frequently during the summer months.

  • Storm damage. The heat and humidity in a Midwest summer can produce major storms and gusty wind. After a weather event, it’s a good idea to check over your gutters for damage. Wind can pull gutters away from the structure, resulting in inadequate diversion of rain away from your house and foundation. Even a small problem can develop into a serious issue in the span of 2-3 strong storms.
  • Hail. Gutters can be dented and disfigured by even marble-sized hail, especially over time. Even small hail showers can scratch, dent, crack and loosen your gutters. Don’t delay if you see an issue after a storm, seek out repair or replacement as soon as possible.
  • Rust. Far from just a cosmetic issue, rust is a major issue in the summer. Damage from loose debris, hail or wind can create scratches and weak spots on the coating of your gutter, making it susceptible to rusting in our humid summers. Once rust starts, if it’s not treated quickly it tends to spread quickly until your gutters are useless.
  • Debris. The foliage of summer is beautiful but it can wreak havoc on your gutters. Falling leaves, branches, seeds and other debris can clog up a gutter quickly and impede its ability to divert water from your roof and foundation.

Keep your home leak-free this summer by completing a thorough inspection of your gutter system after every bout of severe storms. You can also give the team at RSG a call at 816-866-4235 or just click HERE to schedule your complimentary consultation
