Choosing the Right Material for Your Gutters

August 28, 2017

Gutters provide a front-line defense between your home and the elements. While they appear simple and boring, these drainage systems are often complex pathways with an important function to divert damaging moisture away from your roof and foundation of your home. It’s important to know the options for gutters so that you can make the best choice for your needs and budget.  We’ve put together a list of the most popular gutter options.

  • Vinyl—This material is incredibly popular for homes due to ease of installation, low maintenance and durability. However, they can become brittle and crack in our subzero winters. They also flake and chip easily when painted.
  • Aluminum—Following closely behind vinyl, aluminum is also a popular choice. Like vinyl, these gutters are lightweight, rust-proof and easy to install and maintain. However, they are superior as they outperform vinyl in excessive cold, and they also hold paint color well. Aluminum can also be manufactured in seamless versions for aesthetic purposes. A drawback of aluminum is that it is easily misshapen by tree limbs, ladders, and weather incidents.
  • Steel—Stainless steel is a sturdier choice than aluminum or vinyl, and these gutters are virtually indestructible. It is also much more expensive than the other materials, usually 2 to 4 times as pricey as vinyl or aluminum. Steel will eventually rust through and need replacement over time. However, with proper maintenance these gutters can outlast their less expensive counterparts.
  • Copper gutters are chosen for their beauty and longevity. However, copper is exponentially more expensive than other materials, making it an unpopular choice for most homeowners.

Whether you are trying to be frugal or want a system that will withstand many years with minimal maintenance, there’s a gutter material that will meet your needs.
